## MAKER ROBOTICS - STEM DEEP

In Arcade Games, your child becomes an arcade game designer and robotics engineer!

Campers design, build, and code their very own basketball shooter arcade game, where scoring a basket triggers points, lights, and even a fun celebration movement. Using micro:bit, sensors, and servo motors, campers learn how real arcade games work behind the scenes.

Through hands-on building and beginner-friendly coding, your child sees how code, circuits, and mechanics come together to create an interactive game they can play again and again.

This camp is designed especially for ages 4–5 and 6-7 and balances creativity, guided instruction, and playful exploration.

### Solution Topic

Through playful building and guided exploration, students investigate how simple code and electronics bring physical creations to life.

**Students explore questions such as:**

- What makes a robot a robot?
- How can a tiny computer tell lights to turn on or motors to move?
- What makes Arcade games fun?
- What happens when we press a button or change the code?
- How can we improve our robot when it doesn’t work the first time?

### Design, Experiment, Build

**Kids will:**

- Learn the engineering design process for product design
- Ideate, brainstorm what makes a fun, entertaining arcade game
- Learn about simple machines and the fundamentals of Robotics
- Coding fundamentals
- Build circuits with motors and sensors to design and build an exciting Basketball arcade game with Micro:bit that can keep scores, light up in the dark, or make sounds - You Decide!

**BONUS:** MICRO:BIT and accompanying motor and sensors are complementary. Students will take the entire project home.

## Camp Learning Journey

#### Day 1: Welcome to the Arcade - Coding & Game Basics

Campers explore how arcade games work and what makes them fun. They are introduced to the micro:bit and learn how simple code can display numbers and respond to inputs.

#### Day 2: Building the Basketball Shooter

Your child builds the physical structure of their basketball shooter using cardboard and recycled materials. Campers connect sensors and learn how to detect a successful throw.

#### Day 3: Scoring Logic & Game Play

Campers program their game to keep score when a basket is made. They learn how sensors send information to the micro:bit and how code can count and display points.

#### Day 4: Celebration Movement & Game Testing

Your child adds a servo motor to create a fun celebration movement — like a waving arm or spinning feature — every time a point is scored. Campers test, debug, and improve their games.

#### Day 5: Arcade Showcase & Celebration

The final day is all about play and sharing. Campers put finishing touches on their games, invite others to play, and celebrate their creations in an arcade-style showcase.

### What will you learn?

- Fundamentals of Coding
- Circuits and Robotics Introduction
- How sensors detect actions and trigger responses
- Scoring logic and basic game mechanics
- How motors create movement
- Testing, debugging, and improving designs

### What will you make?

- A basketball shooter arcade game
- A working scoring system using sensors
- A celebration movement powered by a servo motor
- An interactive game designed and built by your child

### What will you take?

- Your child’s completed project: the basketball shooter arcade game
- Micro:bit, along with all electronic components and building materials used in the project
- Coding confidence and hands-on engineering experience

### Friday Fun Day

The camp ends with an Arcade Showcase, where campers play each other’s games, demonstrate scoring and celebration features, and celebrate their engineering achievements.

## SKILLS GAINED

## Why does this camp matter?

**Arcade Games shows young learners how technology, creativity, and problem-solving come together in interactive design.** By building a real game that responds to player actions, your child learns that coding isn’t just on a screen, it’s a powerful tool for creating experiences in the real world.

**Lights flash, points score, and celebrations begin!** In Arcade Games, campers design their own interactive basketball shooter arcade game. Every basket triggers movement, lights, and excitement, just like a real arcade.
