EMERGING TECH - 3D VIRTUAL REALITY VR

In Roblox – Pokémon Catcher (VR Light), your child becomes a game designer as they create their own Pokémon-inspired catching adventure inside Roblox Studio.

Campers design colourful 3D worlds, create collectible game assets, and build game logic that allows players to explore and “catch” creatures throughout their environment. Using guided, pre-written scripts, students learn how game mechanics work by making small changes and seeing big results.

Students are also introduced to asset creation and monetization concepts, learning how in-game items and rewards are designed and how game creators earn money, using kid-friendly, simulated systems.

As part of the experience, campers explore VR Light, where they experience their Pokémon world in virtual reality and learn how immersive design changes gameplay.

Solution Topic

Design, Experiment, Build

Through investigative questions, students gain real-world skills in 3D world-building, game design and development, and experience design for virtual reality.

Students explore questions such as:

  • How does the game know when a player has touched or collected something?
  • What makes rewards appear and progress move forward?
  • How do checkpoints and collectibles work together in a game?
  • How does playing in virtual reality change how a game feels and works?

By exploring these ideas through hands-on building and guided scripts, students build early problem-solving skills and develop an understanding of how design, logic, and player experience connect.

Campers will:

  • Learn the basics of game design through creativity, play, and experimentation
  • Research, ideate and brainstorm Pokémon Catcher Game ideas for the adventurous VR Experience
  • Design a colorful Pokémon-inspired 3D world in Roblox Studio
  • Intro to coding via guided and pre-planned LUA Scripting
  • Create collectible items and simple progression systems
  • Explore the VR setup and experience of their creation
  • Explore how players move, look around, and interact in VR mode
  • Build and present

VR Light in This Camp

Students learn how obstacle games use logic and player data to guide gameplay. AI Light concepts are explored through checkpoint systems, collectible logic, and responsive game elements. VR Light allows campers to experience how immersive environments affect player interaction.

Camp Learning Journey

Day 1: Build Your Pokémon World - 3D Design & Exploration

Students begin by learning to navigate Roblox Studio. They design a Pokémon-inspired world by placing terrain, paths, and themed environments where creatures can appear. Campers explore scale, layout, and navigation as they build a world that players can move through comfortably.

Day 2: How Catching Works - Game Logic & Intro to Scripting

Students explore how game mechanics work behind the scenes. Using pre-written scripts, campers learn how to detect, collect, or trigger Pokémon in the game. Students modify (pre-written scripts with gaps) values and logic to control what happens when a player finds a Pokémon, building an understanding of cause and effect in game design.

Day 3: Challenges, Collectibles & Player Experience

Campers expand their game by adding more interactive elements. They place collectibles, adjust difficulty, and design challenges that encourage exploration. Students test their games and refine layout and logic to make the experience fun, fair, and engaging for players.

Day 4: VR Exploration - Experience Your Game in Virtual Reality

Students explore how to play Roblox games in virtual reality. Campers experience their Pokémon world from an immersive perspective and discuss how space, movement, and object placement feel different in VR. They learn how designers think about comfort and immersion, without complex VR programming.

Day 5: Polish, Playtest & Rainbow Showcase

Students refine their obstacle course, test gameplay, and showcase their Rainbow Catcher OBBY to peers.
